A Neutral Selection Guide for Corrosion and High-Temperature Service

Most titanium-versus-Inconel articles are written by someone who sells one of them. Beiyu supplies both titanium and nickel alloys, so the useful answer is not “ours is better” but “here is where each one wins.” The choice usually turns on four checks: service temperature, weight sensitivity, the actual corrosive medium, and whether the extra cost of a nickel alloy adds anything the duty really needs.

The first decision is service temperature

Temperature is the first fork. Titanium alloys stay strong and light through moderate-temperature service, but under sustained load they lose useful strength and oxidation margin once the part moves much beyond about 315C. Nickel alloys such as Inconel 625 and 718 hold strength and oxidation resistance much higher, which is why they stay in scope for hotter pressure parts, exhaust hardware and high-heat fabricated components.

The practical rule is simple: if the duty is below about 315C and the design is not creep-limited, titanium is usually the lighter and less expensive structural choice. Once the duty moves into sustained high-temperature service, nickel alloys become the safer answer.

When weight matters, titanium wins clearly

Titanium is about 45% lighter than Inconel, near 4.5 g/cm3 versus roughly 8.2 to 8.4 g/cm3 for common Inconel grades. Where rotating mass, suspended load or transport weight matters, titanium gives a much stronger strength-to-weight result. Nickel alloys still win on absolute strength at temperature, but they do so with nearly double the density.

The corrosive medium decides the rest

Both material families are corrosion-resistant, but they are not resistant to the same chemistries. The medium, concentration and temperature decide.

Service medium

Better choice

Why

Seawater, wet chlorine, oxidizing and neutral chlorides

Titan

Its passive oxide film is exceptionally stable in these media.

Reducing acids, sulfur-bearing chemistries and mixed hot acids

Inconel

Nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloys hold up where titanium’s film struggles.

Aggressive aqueous chloride with pitting and crevice risk

Both can work; Inconel 625 is often chosen

Alloy 625 is a common specification for chloride-service fabrication.

High-temperature oxidizing or creep service

Inconel

Strength and oxidation resistance stay useful far above titanium’s limit.

For the seawater side, see our titanium seawater corrosion resistance guide. Where the chemistry moves into stronger acid or hotter chloride duty, the comparison shifts toward Alloy 625 plate and other nickel-alloy options already grouped in our Chemieanlagen range.

Strength and cost are the real trade

Inconel 718 carries roughly 40% higher specified minimum ultimate strength than Grade 5 titanium, around 1275 MPa versus 895 MPa. That higher high-temperature strength comes with a cost penalty driven by nickel content and more complex processing. If the duty does not need that extra heat capability or strength reserve, specifying Inconel can mean paying for performance the part never uses.

The honest summary is a trade, not a winner. Choose titanium when weight, seawater service, oxidizing chlorides or budget are the real constraint and the duty stays in a moderate temperature window. Choose Inconel when the service is hotter, more reducing, or genuinely strength-limited and the extra weight and cost are acceptable.

How to specify either one on an RFQ

An RFQ should describe the duty, not just the trade name. State the operating temperature, medium and concentration, pressure or mechanical load, form and dimensions with tolerance, quantity, and certificate scope. That allows the supplier to confirm whether titanium or a nickel alloy is the better route and quote the exact material instead of a generic substitute.

Both families can be quoted with EN 10204 3.1 documentation and heat-number traceability. The basic field list is in our Checkliste für Titanstab-Anfragen. Because Beiyu supplies titanium together with Alloy 625, 718 and 825, an RFQ that is genuinely on the fence can be priced both ways for a direct selection decision.

FAQ

Is titanium or Inconel stronger?

Inconel is stronger in absolute terms. Inconel 718 is about 40% higher than Grade 5 titanium on specified minimum ultimate strength. Titanium wins on strength per kilogram because it is much lighter.

Is titanium or Inconel better for corrosion?

That depends on the medium. Titanium is usually better in seawater, wet chlorine and oxidizing chlorides. Inconel is usually better in reducing acids, sulfur-bearing chemistries and hotter mixed-acid duty.

When should I use Inconel instead of titanium?

Use Inconel when the service runs hotter than about 315C under load, when the chemistry is reducing rather than oxidizing, or when the part is strength-limited and the weight penalty is acceptable.

Which is more expensive, titanium or Inconel?

Inconel generally costs more because of nickel content and processing complexity. If titanium already meets the duty, switching to Inconel often adds cost without adding useful performance.

Request a quote for titanium or nickel alloy

To quote the right route, Beiyu needs the service conditions, the form, dimensions and tolerance, the quantity, and the certificate scope. Send the drawing or specification through the contact page and we review whether titanium or a nickel alloy is the better fit before quoting.

Over 15 years in titanium export he has learned to review each specification line himself, checking grade, standard, dimensions, tolerance and certificate scope against mill capability before quoting, rather than routing enquiries through a sales desk. His day-to-day work spans the questions this site is written to answer: choosing between commercially pure and alloyed titanium grades for a corrosive service, reading a mill test certificate against the ordered standard, and matching a buyer's designation (ASTM grade, UNS, German Werkstoff number or French NF code) to the same metal across markets. Beiyu supplies titanium, nickel-alloy and refractory mill products across bar, rod, plate, tube, block, ring, coil, ingot, forgings and machined parts, with EN 10204 3.1 documentation and heat-number traceability.
["GET
