Product Introduction
Grade 12 Titanium Forgings for Corrosion-Resistant Components
Grade 12 titanium is a titanium alloy with nickel and molybdenum additions, often specified as Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni or UNS R53400. Grade 12 titanium forgings are used where a buyer needs a forged titanium component with corrosion resistance, strength and drawing-controlled geometry for chemical, marine, heat transfer or industrial equipment.
Forged products should be quoted from drawings or technical specifications. The RFQ should define final shape, forging allowance, machining allowance, heat treatment condition and inspection requirements.
Grade and Standard
- Material: Grade 12 titanium / Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni / UNS R53400.
- Common forging reference: ASTM B381 when specified by the buyer.
- Forms: forged rings, discs, blocks, sleeves, flanges, valve parts and drawing-based forgings.
- Condition: forged and heat-treated condition according to grade and purchase specification.
Drawing and Size Requirements
Grade 12 forging RFQs should include drawing number, forging shape, OD, ID, thickness, length, machining allowance, tolerance and quantity. If the part will be machined after forging, identify datum surfaces, bore tolerance, sealing faces, holes, threads and surface finish requirements.
Applications
Grade 12 titanium forgings may be used in chemical equipment, seawater-related equipment, heat exchanger components, valve and pump parts, flanges, pressure equipment parts and custom industrial assemblies. Final suitability should be confirmed by the buyer's design or corrosion engineer.
Inspection and Documentation
Buyers can request MTC, EN10204 3.1 documentation, heat number traceability, chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional inspection. Depending on part size and service conditions, ultrasonic testing, liquid penetrant testing, PMI testing, hardness testing or third-party inspection can be specified before quotation.
If required, liquid penetrant testing (PT) and its reporting and traceability scope must be stated in the drawing, quotation and purchase order.

FAQ
What is Grade 12 titanium?
Grade 12 titanium is Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni, commonly associated with UNS R53400. It is selected for certain corrosion-resistant industrial applications.
Which standard applies to Grade 12 titanium forgings?
ASTM B381 is commonly referenced for titanium and titanium alloy forgings when the buyer specifies it.
Can Grade 12 forgings be supplied from drawings?
Yes. Drawing-based RFQs should include final dimensions, machining allowance, tolerance, heat treatment condition and inspection requirements.
Forging Review Notes
Grade 12 titanium forgings should be reviewed from both material and geometry. A simple forged block may only require grade, section size and machining allowance, while a flange, sleeve or pressure equipment component may require drawing review, bore tolerance, sealing face protection, NDT and third-party inspection. If the part is used in chemical equipment, include the operating media and design notes that explain why Grade 12 is specified.
For custom forgings, the buyer should state whether rough machining is needed before shipment. Rough machining can help verify geometry and prepare surfaces for inspection, but it also changes packing, marking and dimensional reporting requirements.
For export packing, separate heavy forgings by size and protect finished or rough-machined surfaces from impact. Marking should connect each piece to grade, heat number and drawing reference when traceability is required.
Acceptance criteria should be agreed before production starts.

Specification detail with sources
ASTM B381 lists Grade F-12 as a titanium alloy with 0.3 percent molybdenum and 0.8 percent nickel under UNS R53400 (ASTM B381, scope). That designation fixes the chemistry a mill certificate is checked against. The forging route and the service decision sit outside it. Whether Grade 12 suits a given duty is a design review the buyer runs against the medium, its concentration and temperature, and any crevice or weld detail on the part. Beiyu supplies material to the ordered standard and does not qualify it for a service condition.
The route is set by the standard as well: material conforming to ASTM B348 has to be used when forgings are produced to ASTM B381 (ASTM B381, materials and manufacture), which is why a Grade 12 forging enquiry starts with the input bar or billet and then moves to the forged shape and the finished drawing.
| Forged form on a Grade 12 enquiry | Envelope Beiyu reviews it against |
|---|---|
| Forged round bar | Diameter 50 mm to 500 mm, length to 3000 mm |
| Ring | Outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm, inside diameter 10 mm to 900 mm, height 20 mm to 400 mm |
| Disc | Outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm, height 20 mm to 500 mm |
| Block | 50 mm to 600 mm across the governing section |
The table is the range Beiyu reviews an enquiry against. It does not say that every size, condition and inspection combination exists across the whole span. Beiyu's forging table carries condition codes R and M, and the ordered condition belongs on the purchase order together with the standard and the drawing revision.
Chemistry and mechanical values reported for Grade 12 are produced by the methods the standard references, among them ASTM E8 for tension testing and ASTM E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen by inert gas fusion (ASTM B381, referenced documents). Naming one of these methods explains how a reported result was obtained. It creates no automatic inspection: ultrasonic examination, corrosion testing to a method the buyer names, positive material identification and witnessed inspection are order items, each carrying its own method, extent and acceptance criteria. Certification follows the same rule and is supplied with MTC and EN 10204 3.1 by order scope.
Largest forged sizes reviewed against, in both units
The envelope above is written in millimetres because that is how the drawing usually arrives. Buyers working to inch drawings compare capacity in inches, so the same limits are restated below in both units. Nothing here is new capability; it is the same envelope expressed so it can be compared against a supplier list without converting anything first.
| Forged form | Largest size reviewed against | Same limit in inches | Governing dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with inside diameter to 900 mm (35.4 in) and height to 400 mm (15.7 in) |
| Disc | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with thickness to 500 mm (19.7 in) |
| Block | Up to 600 mm across the governing section | up to 23.6 in | The section named on the drawing |
| Forged round bar | Diameter up to 500 mm, length to 3000 mm | up to 19.7 in diameter, 118 in long | Diameter, then length |
These are production envelope limits reviewed against, not a stock statement, and not every combination of grade, size, condition and inspection exists across the whole range. The ordered combination is confirmed at quotation. Where a drawing sits outside a limit above, say so in the enquiry rather than rounding the part down, because the answer may simply be no, and knowing that early is worth more than a rounded drawing.
Two fields decide the answer faster than the size itself. The governing dimension is the one the tolerance applies to, and on a ring that is not always the outside diameter. The supply condition, stated as R or M on the order, belongs on the same line as the size, since the same nominal size in a different condition is a different piece of work.

These are the fields an order line needs. The mechanical requirement that applies is the one in ASTM B381 for the ordered form, size range and condition, so it is confirmed against the ordered standard at quotation rather than carried across from another product standard.

Inspection and documentation
The inspection scope is set by the order rather than assumed. State which examinations are required, to which acceptance standard and class, and at which stage they are performed, because those four fields are what make an inspection line objectively verifiable during receiving inspection.
