Product Introduction
Titanium Hip and Joint Implant Forgings
Beiyu supplies forged titanium components for hip, knee and joint implant and medical-related applications. Forging is used for implant-related structural parts because it produces a controlled grain structure and good mechanical properties. Components are made from biocompatible titanium grades and finished according to the customer drawing and specification.
Forged implant-related parts should be quoted from a drawing, with the grade, forging condition, machining allowance and inspection requirement clearly defined.
Grade and Standards
| Common grades | Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5) and Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) for implant-related parts |
|---|---|
| Standard reference | ASTM F620 for Ti-6Al-4V ELI forgings, ASTM F136 material, ASTM B381 for general forgings |
| Condition | Forged then heat treated and machined as specified |
| Forms | Forged blanks, near-net forgings and drawing-based machined components |
Drawing Data and Processing
RFQs should include the drawing, grade, forging dimensions, machining allowance, heat-treatment condition and inspection points. Buyers should mark critical dimensions, surface requirements and any cleanliness requirement for implant-related components.
Common Applications
Ti-6Al-4V ELI
Inspection and Documentation
Buyers can request mill test certificate, EN10204 3.1 documentation, heat number traceability, chemical composition and mechanical properties. Ultrasonic testing, microstructure examination or third-party inspection can be agreed when defined in the purchase specification.
Packaging and Export Information
Forged titanium components are protected against surface damage and contamination, separated to prevent contact damage, and marked by part, grade and heat number where traceability is required.

FAQ
Why are implant components forged?
Forging produces a controlled grain structure and good mechanical properties, which is preferred for structural implant-related components.
Which titanium grade is used for hip implant forgings?
Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-4V ELI (Grade 23) are common; the grade and controlling standard should be confirmed from the drawing.
What is needed to quote implant forgings?
Send the drawing, grade, dimensions, machining allowance, heat-treatment condition, inspection requirement and quantity.
Procurement Notes for Hip Implant Titanium Forgings
For hip implant titanium forging RFQs, buyers should define whether the material requirement is Ti-6Al-4V ELI / Grade 23, ASTM F136, ISO 5832-3 or a customer-controlled medical specification. The order should also state forging blank size, machining allowance, heat treatment condition, required grain-flow orientation if specified, and whether each heat must be traceable from raw material to finished forging blank.
Medical-related parts normally need tighter documentation control than general industrial forgings. Useful RFQ details include chemical composition limits, mechanical property acceptance, ultrasonic inspection requirement, surface condition, marking method, lot separation, packaging cleanliness and whether EN10204 3.1 or customer-format certificates are required. Beiyu should not assume implant approval from the product name alone; acceptance must follow the buyer's drawing and specification.
For controlled medical-related purchasing, include drawing revision, lot size, acceptance standard and any required inspection witness points before final quotation.
Specification detail with sources
Two different documents get named on hip component enquiries, and they are not interchangeable. ASTM B381 is the forging standard, and its Grade F-23 carries UNS R56407 (ASTM B381, scope). ASTM F136 is a wrought material specification written for surgical implant applications and carries UNS R56401 (ASTM F136, scope). A drawing that calls for ASTM F136 is naming a material specification. A drawing that calls for ASTM B381 Grade F-23 is naming the forging standard. The order has to say which document governs, because the UNS number, the reported properties and the certificate all follow from that choice.
Material conforming to ASTM B348 has to be used when forgings are produced to ASTM B381 (ASTM B381, materials and manufacture), so the route runs from bar stock to the forged blank before any machining stage is discussed.
| Boundary on a hip component enquiry | What Beiyu confirms at quotation |
|---|---|
| Governing document | ASTM B381 Grade F-23 under UNS R56407, or ASTM F136 under UNS R56401, whichever the drawing names |
| Forged input size | Round bar 50 mm to 500 mm diameter and up to 3000 mm long, disc outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm and height 20 mm to 500 mm, block 50 mm to 600 mm |
| Manufacturing stage supplied | Forged blank, or a machined stage named on the order, with the machining allowance stated |
| Inspection plan | Tests, extent and acceptance criteria written into the purchase order |
| Device acceptance | Held by the OEM under its own qualification and approval, outside the scope of a material order |
The sizes in that table are the forging envelope Beiyu reviews a drawing against, and they carry no statement about material on hand or about every grade being available at every size.
Reported results come from the methods the forging standard references, including ASTM E8 for tension testing, ASTM E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen by inert gas fusion and ASTM E1447 for hydrogen (ASTM B381, referenced documents). Naming a method explains how a reported result was obtained. It does not create an inspection requirement on its own, so ultrasonic examination, positive material identification, microstructure review and witnessed inspection belong on the purchase order with method, extent and acceptance class, and the stage has to be named because an examination on the forged blank and one after machining do not cover the same material. Beiyu supplies forgings and forged blanks to the standard and drawing on the order, with MTC and EN 10204 3.1 by order scope. Approval of the finished device stays with the OEM.
Largest forged sizes reviewed against, in both units
The envelope above is written in millimetres because that is how the drawing usually arrives. Buyers working to inch drawings compare capacity in inches, so the same limits are restated below in both units. Nothing here is new capability; it is the same envelope expressed so it can be compared against a supplier list without converting anything first.
| Forged form | Largest size reviewed against | Same limit in inches | Governing dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with inside diameter to 900 mm (35.4 in) and height to 400 mm (15.7 in) |
| Disc | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with thickness to 500 mm (19.7 in) |
| Block | Up to 600 mm across the governing section | up to 23.6 in | The section named on the drawing |
| Forged round bar | Diameter up to 500 mm, length to 3000 mm | up to 19.7 in diameter, 118 in long | Diameter, then length |
These are production envelope limits reviewed against, not a stock statement, and not every combination of grade, size, condition and inspection exists across the whole range. The ordered combination is confirmed at quotation. Where a drawing sits outside a limit above, say so in the enquiry rather than rounding the part down, because the answer may simply be no, and knowing that early is worth more than a rounded drawing.
Two fields decide the answer faster than the size itself. The governing dimension is the one the tolerance applies to, and on a ring that is not always the outside diameter. The supply condition, stated as R or M on the order, belongs on the same line as the size, since the same nominal size in a different condition is a different piece of work.
