Titanium Materials for Medical Industry

Titanium material and drawing-based parts for implant-stock, instrument and medical-device manufacturing RFQs, quoted against the buyer’s specified grade, standard, form, surface, dimensions and acceptance documents.

A medical RFQ should begin with the purchasing route, not with the phrase “medical grade titanium.” Material ordered to an implant material specification is different from industrial titanium used to manufacture an instrument, fixture, housing or other device component. Beiyu supplies titanium material and drawing-based parts; the buyer remains responsible for the device design, validation, regulatory route and final-use approval.

Choose the medical titanium procurement route

Use the standard written on the drawing or purchase specification. The table separates three routes that are often mixed together in a general titanium enquiry.

RFQ route Use this route when Define before quotation Buyer boundary
CP titanium for implant-material RFQs The drawing or purchase specification explicitly calls for an unalloyed titanium grade under ASTM F67. Specified CP grade, product form, dimensions, tolerance, condition, surface, quantity, heat/lot traceability and required acceptance documents. ASTM F67 conformity does not by itself approve the finished implant or the buyer’s manufacturing process.
Ti-6Al-4V ELI for implant-material RFQs The drawing or purchase specification explicitly calls for wrought Ti-6Al-4V ELI under ASTM F136. Grade 23 / ELI wording should be reconciled to the governing document. Standard revision, form, dimensions, tolerance, condition, surface, quantity, chemistry/mechanical-data requirement and inspection scope. Do not substitute ordinary Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V when the PO requires the ELI chemistry and acceptance route.
Instrument or medical-device component material The drawing specifies an industrial mill-product standard or a proprietary material requirement for an instrument, fixture, housing, spring, pin or other device component. Exact grade and standard, bar/sheet/wire/forging route, drawing revision, machining allowance, surface, tolerance, quantity and documents. Medical end use alone does not convert an industrial material standard into an implant specification.
Drawing-based machined or forged part The purchase is for a blank, semi-finished part or finished component rather than mill material only. 2D drawing, 3D file where available, material callout, revision, datum/tolerance notes, surface condition, edge/burr requirement, inspection records and packing. Quotation confirms the supplied scope; the buyer’s drawing and acceptance plan control finished-part use.
Material-conformity boundary. Beiyu can quote material or parts to the standard, grade, dimensions, inspection and documentation written into the order. We do not infer implant approval, device approval, sterile condition, regulatory clearance or customer-process validation from the titanium grade name.

Match the product form to the manufacturing step

Bar and machining stock

For turned parts, threaded components, instrument blanks and other machined items. Diameter tolerance, straightness, surface condition and machining allowance can affect feeding, yield and downstream finishing.

Titanium bar category

Wire and small-section material

For springs, pins and device-manufacturing routes. State diameter tolerance, coil/spool or straight length, surface, straightness, lot separation and packing needed by the downstream process.

Titanium wire category

Sheet, plate, forgings and parts

For formed parts, covers, plates, machining blanks and drawing-based shapes. Define form-specific standard, condition, thickness or stock envelope, inspection and whether supply stops at raw material, blank or finished component.

Standards and traceability should agree with the PO

Use the buyer’s governing document to separate implant-material specifications from industrial product-form specifications. For an overview of CP titanium, Ti-6Al-4V, ASTM F67, ASTM F136 and ISO 5832 routes, read the titanium for medical implants guide. For bar-specific purchasing, compare the ASTM F67 CP titanium bar guide and the ASTM F136 Ti-6Al-4V ELI bar guide.

The RFQ should state whether the acceptance package needs heat or lot identification, mill test certificate, chemistry and mechanical-property results, dimensional inspection, surface inspection, PMI, third-party inspection or another record. EN 10204 3.1 documentation can be reviewed when it is explicitly required. Availability and exact document scope are confirmed in the quotation and purchase order.

The UNS number that changes with the specification

Medical titanium enquiries rarely go wrong on the grade. They go wrong on the number written next to it, because for Grade 23 there is more than one correct answer and which one is correct depends on the document the order names.

Specification named on the order UNS number that belongs with Grade 23
ASTM B series product specifications, such as the bar and billet specification UNS R56407
The implant specification ASTM F136 UNS R56401

Both numbers are right in their own document, which is why this is not caught by checking whether the number exists. It is caught only by reading the number against the specification beside it. The mismatch usually starts in a purchase order template written years ago against one document and later reused for the other, and it survives because everything else on the line is correct.

Where the number reaches a device file, correcting it afterwards costs more than writing it once. The practical rule is to treat the specification as the field that governs and the UNS number as the field that follows it, never the other way round, and to state the grade, the specification and the UNS number together on the same line so a receiving check can be done in one reading.

Medical titanium RFQ checklist

  • Implant-material, instrument/device-material or drawing-based part route
  • Exact grade, standard and revision from the drawing or PO
  • Product form, dimensions, tolerance and condition
  • Surface finish, straightness, burr/edge and cleanliness requirements
  • Prototype, pilot or repeat-production quantity
  • Heat/lot separation, marking and traceability requirement
  • Required inspection and document package
  • Drawing revision, machining scope and downstream processing notes
  • Individual protection, separated cavities or other packing controls
  • Requested delivery window and destination

Send the material callout or drawing first. We will review the form, supply condition, inspection/document scope and quotation route without assuming finished-device approval.
