Titanium Materials for Aerospace Industry

Titanium Materials for Aerospace Industry

Aerospace buyers usually choose titanium when a component needs a practical balance of strength, weight reduction, corrosion resistance and service temperature. For procurement teams, the material request is rarely just “titanium.” A usable RFQ normally needs grade, product form, standard, dimension, tolerance, surface condition, heat treatment condition, drawing revision and documentation requirement. Beiyu supplies titanium mill products and custom titanium components for aerospace-related manufacturing, including bar, plate, sheet, tube, wire, forgings and machined parts.

Where Titanium Is Used in Aerospace Work

Titanium alloys are used in aircraft structures, fasteners, brackets, landing gear-related hardware, engine-adjacent parts, hydraulic tubing, sensor housings, fixtures and lightweight assemblies. Grade 5 titanium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V or UNS R56400, is often selected for strength-critical parts. Grade 23 can be considered where tighter chemistry and fracture-toughness expectations are part of the buyer’s specification. Commercially pure Grade 1 and Grade 2 titanium are more common for corrosion-resistant sheet, plate, ducting, covers and non-structural parts where formability is important.

Common Product Forms

Grade and Standard Selection

Typical aerospace-related RFQs reference ASTM B348 for bar, ASTM B265 for sheet and plate, ASTM B381 for forgings and AMS specifications when the buyer’s drawing requires them. AMS 4928 is often associated with Grade 5 titanium bar and forgings, while AMS 4911 is often used for Grade 5 sheet and plate. The final standard must come from the buyer’s drawing or purchase specification, because the same alloy may be ordered under different acceptance rules depending on application and customer approval route.

Engineering and Procurement Details

Aerospace material purchasing usually focuses on traceability, chemistry, mechanical properties and dimensional consistency. For bar and plate, buyers may specify diameter or thickness tolerance, straightness, flatness, surface finish, ultrasonic inspection, cut length and packing method. For machined components, the RFQ should include drawing revision, material grade, tolerance class, threaded features, edge break requirements, surface roughness, heat treatment condition if applicable and whether parts are supplied as rough machined or finished machined.

Surface condition matters. Titanium bar may be supplied peeled, ground or polished depending on downstream machining. Sheet and plate may be hot rolled, cold rolled, pickled or polished. Forgings normally require agreement on forging ratio, rough machining allowance, heat treatment condition and inspection scope. If the buyer requires EN10204 3.1 mill test certificate, chemical composition and mechanical properties should be traceable to the supplied heat or lot.

Quality Documentation

For aerospace-related orders, Beiyu can quote material with mill test certificate, heat number traceability, dimensional inspection records and packing list. Additional inspection such as ultrasonic testing, PMI testing or third-party inspection should be stated at RFQ stage so the correct route can be planned before production or cutting. We do not assume an aerospace approval, customer approval or certification unless it is stated in the purchase specification and confirmed during quotation.

Export Packing and RFQ Information

Export packing should protect titanium surfaces from handling damage and avoid contact with carbon steel contamination. Bars and tubes are usually bundled and protected by wrapping or wooden cases. Sheet and plate may require surface film, paper separation, pallet packing or wooden crate packing. Machined parts are packed to prevent thread damage and edge impact.

For a clear quotation, send grade, standard, size, quantity, tolerance, surface condition, delivery requirement, drawing files if any and required documents. If the part is for an aerospace project, include the exact drawing notes and acceptance criteria rather than a general application description. That keeps the quotation practical and reduces technical back-and-forth before purchasing.

Drawing Review Before Quotation

For aerospace-related parts, a drawing review is often more important than the product name. Two requests for Grade 5 bar can have very different routes if one is a simple cut bar and the other is a machined block with tight positional tolerance, threaded holes and surface roughness notes. When Beiyu reviews an RFQ, the key points are material grade, governing standard, heat treatment condition, machining allowance, tolerance, inspection records and whether the material must be separated by heat number. If a buyer needs first-article inspection, serialized labels or special packing, those requirements should be included before quotation.

For export orders, packaging should match the value of the material and the risk of handling damage. Aerospace-related titanium sheet, bar and machined parts should not be packed loosely with carbon steel contact points. Long bar and tube require end protection and bundle support. Finished machined parts may need individual wrapping, thread protection and clear labels by part number, grade and heat number. These details reduce receiving problems and help the buyer connect incoming material to internal inspection records.
