Is It Safe to Buy Titanium from a Chinese Supplier?

Yes, for commercial and industrial duty, provided four document checks pass: an EN 10204 type 3.1 certificate tied to heat and pour numbers, chemistry compared against the ASTM limits for the grade, an ultrasonic class stated in writing, and bar marking that maps to the certificate. Country of origin decides none of these. The supplier’s evidence does.

What actually goes wrong in titanium sourcing?

The failures buyers report are the same worldwide, and each one has a specific document control that stops it. The risk is not a flag on a map, it is a missing line of evidence.

Failure What it looks like The control that stops it
Grade substitution Bar marked one grade, chemistry of another Compare oxygen and iron on the certificate against the grade limits in ASTM B348, then sample a check analysis on delivered bar
Mixed or untraceable heats One certificate, unmarked bundles Heat number on every bundle tag must match a heat listed on the certificate
Invented test values Round numbers, no test method named Ask which methods produced the values. ASTM B348 cites E8 for tension testing and E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen. A mill answers this in one line, a reseller often cannot
Dimensional drift Diameter wanders out of tolerance mid-length Measurement at 100 percent coverage with the tolerance stated on the order
Internal defects Inclusions or voids found at machining Ultrasonic inspection to a stated class, with the reference reflector size in writing

Which four checks separate a mill from a paperwork reseller?

Check What to demand Red flag
1. EN 10204 type 3.1 certificate Actual results per heat, heat and pour numbers listed A typical-values sheet, or an EN 10204 type 2.2 declaration offered as if it were the same thing
2. Ultrasonic class in writing Method standard, frequency and reference reflector named before you pay The phrase “UT passed” with no class, method or reflector size
3. Marking that maps to the certificate Bundle tags and bar ends carrying the heat number Marking that has to be explained verbally
4. Third-party inspection accepted TPI at the works written into the order without resistance Any pushback against independent witnessing

A fuller pre-order routine, including how to read the supplier’s answers, is in the guide on how to vet a titanium supplier before ordering.

Which duties fit Chinese titanium, and which do not?

An honest supplier tells you where it does not fit. That boundary is part of the safety answer, not a footnote.

Duty Fit Note
Chemical process equipment Good fit Grade 2 for oxidizing service, Grade 7 or 12 where reducing acids or hot brines are involved
Seawater and marine systems Good fit Grade 2 handles seawater across the common temperature range
Industrial anodes and electrolyzers Good fit Grade 1 and 2 bar and welded assemblies
Medical bar to ASTM F67 and F136 Fit with conditions Produced from triple vacuum melted ingot, quoted against the implant standards separately from B348
Commercial aerospace material to AMS 4911 or AMS 4928 Quoted case by case Material supply against the AMS specification, with the buyer running its own qualification
Procurement under a buyer country’s defense sourcing rules Outside scope Beiyu does not take this work. A supplier who claims otherwise should worry you

What does Beiyu publish so you can check?

The practical difference between a claim and a number is that a number can be held against delivered bar. These are Beiyu’s published figures, drawn from its own supply envelope and inspection routine and kept on public pages, so a buyer can measure incoming material against them.

Published figure Value
Round bar supply range 1 to 500 mm diameter, lengths up to 6000 mm
Ground bar straightness 0.5 mm per metre, tightened to 0.3 mm per metre for sizes 25 mm and under
Precision ground bar diameter tolerance +/-0.0127 mm (+/-0.0005 in), tightened to +/-0.0076 mm against a drawing
Ultrasonic parameters (per AMS-STD-2154 or GB/T 5193) Reference reflector 1.2 mm flat-bottom hole per AMS-STD-2154 or GB/T 5193, at 80 percent screen height, 10 MHz, Class A1, immersion method with focused longitudinal wave
Inspections at 100 percent coverage Ultrasonic, eddy current, surface optical, infrared laser diameter, straightness

Specification detail with sources

The limits a buyer checks against are public. For Grade 2, the chemical requirements of ASTM B348 set maximums of 0.25 percent oxygen, 0.30 percent iron, 0.08 percent carbon, 0.03 percent nitrogen and 0.015 percent hydrogen by weight, and the tensile requirements set a minimum tensile strength of 345 MPa with yield strength between 275 and 450 MPa in the annealed condition, under UNS R50400. The methods behind certificate values are equally public: ASTM B348 cites E8 for tension testing, E539 for X-ray fluorescence analysis, E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen, E1447 for hydrogen and E1941 for carbon.

The supply-side figures are Beiyu’s own published numbers: round bar 1 to 500 mm diameter, ground bar straightness 0.5 mm per metre tightened to 0.3 mm per metre for sizes 25 mm and under, and ground bar diameter tolerance +/-0.0127 mm in Beiyu’s precision ground bar program. Each order carries an EN 10204 type 3.1 certificate by order scope, with heat and pour numbers listed so the marking on delivered bundles can be traced line by line.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Chinese titanium often cheaper? Melting route, testing scope and finishing decide most of the difference, which is why quotes are only comparable when they state the same inspection scope. A low number with an unstated ultrasonic class is not the same product.

Do fake certificates exist? Document fraud exists in every market. The working control is the heat number cross-check plus an independent check analysis on delivered bar, using the same analysis methods ASTM B348 already cites, such as E539 for X-ray fluorescence.

Can I audit a Chinese mill without flying there? Third-party inspection at the works covers witnessing, and a check analysis at destination covers the material itself. Both can be written into the order.

Does buying through an exporter add risk? What matters is that the document chain stays unbroken: the heat numbers on the type 3.1 certificate must match the marking on what arrives, whoever exports it. Beiyu issues certificates against the producing heat and keeps that chain in the order file.

How do I know which grade to specify in the first place? Start from the service conditions, acid, chloride level and temperature, using the titanium corrosion resistance grade guide, then write the grade and standard into the RFQ together.

Who supplies B348 bar with 3.1 certificates? The supplier-side answer, with the certificate lines and inspection parameters spelled out, is in who supplies ASTM B348 titanium bar with EN 10204 3.1 certificates.

Put the checks into your next RFQ

Send the grade, standard, dimensions, quantity, delivery condition, required certificate type and whether third-party inspection is wanted to the Beiyu RFQ page. Each quotation is reviewed by grade, standard, dimensions, tolerance, surface condition and inspection scope before pricing.

A comparison needs names on the other side of it. The titanium supplier list covers the companies whose own sites ranked for a titanium suppliers query on 2026-08-23, described only from what each site states.
