Niobium

Niobium bar, rod, sheet, plate, seamless tube and welded tube routes for specified industrial RFQs.

This category routes RFQs to niobium bar, rod, sheet and plate and niobium seamless or welded tube. Use ASTM B392 for bar and rod, ASTM B393 for sheet and plate, or ASTM B394 for tube when the applicable product standard is ordered.
State the exact UNS independently from the product form. R04200 and R04210 are unalloyed-niobium grades under these ASTM routes; niobium-1% zirconium uses separate UNS designations. Send exact UNS, standard, dimensions, condition, tolerance, quantity, application and inspection-document scope with the RFQ.

Niobium bar, sheet and tube selection

Niobium RFQs should identify the product form and exact UNS independently. ASTM B392, B393 and B394 cover different forms, while unalloyed niobium and niobium-1% zirconium use different UNS designations.

How ordering works for niobium material

Choose the form-specific standard first: ASTM B392 for bar and rod, ASTM B393 for sheet and plate, or ASTM B394 for tube. Then state the exact UNS and condition. A trade label alone is not enough to distinguish unalloyed niobium from niobium-1% zirconium.

Price and schedule depend on UNS, form, dimensions, condition, tolerance, surface, seamless or welded route, quantity, inspection, documents and packing. Minimum quantity, stock position and lead time are confirmed per quotation.

Document scope: Chemistry, mechanical results, dimensional report, NDT and traceability are included only as required by the ordered specification and purchase order.

Niobium RFQ questions

Which Niobium grade should be specified?

Select the grade by service medium, strength requirement, forming or machining route and any buyer drawing. Common options in this category include Unalloyed niobium, Niobium-1% zirconium by exact UNS, Bar / sheet, Pipe / tube.

Which standards apply to Niobium RFQs?

The purchase order should state the applicable material or project standard. Typical references for this category include ASTM B392 bar / rod, ASTM B393 sheet / plate, ASTM B394 tube, Exact UNS and condition by RFQ.

What information should be sent for quotation?

Send grade, standard, dimensions, tolerance, quantity, surface condition, application, destination and required documents such as MTC or EN 10204 3.1.

More about Niobium

Specification detail with sources

The two designations this page lists are both unalloyed niobium, and the purchase order carries the distinction between them through the UNS number rather than through the element name. Density is the other working number: niobium runs 8.6 grams per cubic centimeter against 16.7 for tantalum, the metal it most resembles chemically, so a weighed bar settles which of the two actually arrived when markings are in doubt.

Beiyu Titanium supplies this category to the envelope published further down this page, and quotes each item against the buyer’s drawing and the standard the order names. Every order runs the same release discipline as Beiyu’s other lines: six fields reviewed before any quotation, grade, standard, dimensions, tolerance, surface condition and inspection scope, chemical composition checked through one of two laboratory routes, dimensional inspection recorded against the ordered tolerance, third party inspection when the contract agrees it, and MTC with EN 10204 3.1 under heat number traceability by order scope.

Supply envelope for niobium

Niobium is bought in small quantities against tight drawings, so the size range and the grade both belong on the enquiry rather than only the element name.

Form Range
Sheet and plate 0.03 mm to 10 mm thick, width 30 mm to 1000 mm, length 50 mm to 2000 mm
Round bar and rod Ø3 mm to 100 mm, length to 6000 mm
Wire Ø0.3 mm to 3.0 mm
Pipe Ø2.0 mm to 100 mm, length to 8000 mm

The table is quoted against ASTM B392, ASTM B393 and ASTM B394 as the governing specifications for the family; which of them applies to a given item is confirmed with the order rather than assumed from the form.

Two grades are supplied, R04200 and R04210, and the grade with its number is what fixes the composition table on the certificate rather than the element name on its own. Those are the ranges Beiyu Titanium supplies as standard. Anything outside them is a custom enquiry rather than an assumption the buyer can make.

Nb-Ti alloy wire is ordered separately from niobium

The table above covers the two niobium grades quoted on this page. Nb-47Ti, also written as 53Nb-47Ti, is a different alloy and is ordered on its own terms: it is not one of those grades, and Beiyu Titanium does not accept it against the specifications they are quoted to.

Field What Beiyu Titanium supplies
Alloy Nb-47Ti, also written 53Nb-47Ti
Condition Annealed
Diameter tolerance at Ø0.20 mm ±0.01 mm
Certificate EN 10204 3.1 with heat number traceability, reporting scope set by the order
Analysis reported Chemical analysis with gas analysis for carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen

Fine wire is where a tolerance figure stops being self explanatory. At Ø0.20 mm a diameter tolerance of ±0.01 mm is five percent of the diameter, so the enquiry has to say what the figure applies to: the full delivered length, or a sampling plan the buyer already uses. State whether ovality is controlled separately as well, because a round tolerance and an ovality limit are two different acceptance criteria.

That tolerance is the Beiyu Titanium supply range at this diameter in this alloy. It is confirmed against the ordered form and quantity at quotation, not carried as a catalogue figure.

Three more lines close the specification. The delivery form has to be written in: spool, coil or straight cut lengths. The surface condition is stated apart from the metallurgical condition. And the acceptance basis has to be named, either the product standard the certificate reports against or the drawing, since that is what the reported chemistry and dimensions are compared with.
