Chemical processing forgings are specified by the medium, not by the part name
A valve body, an agitator shaft and a sleeve can be the same grade or three different grades on the same plant. What decides it is the process medium the part sits in, and that has to be on the enquiry before a grade can be confirmed.
| What the enquiry has to state |
|---|
| The process medium and its concentration |
| The operating temperature |
| The part and its drawing |
| Which examinations apply and to what acceptance level |
Which grade the medium points to
In Beiyu’s export enquiry experience these three grades are the ones buyers name for chemical service, in the pattern below. The selection itself belongs to the process engineer, and Beiyu confirms the grade against the ordered standard rather than choosing it for the buyer.
| Grade | Under ASTM B381 | UNS | What Beiyu’s enquiries typically name it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 2 unalloyed titanium | Grade F-2 | R50400 | General corrosion service where weldability and formability matter |
| Grade 7 palladium-bearing unalloyed titanium | Grade F-7 | R52400 | Reducing acids and crevice corrosion conditions |
| Grade 12 Ti-0.3Mo-0.8Ni | Grade F-12 | R53400 | Hot chloride and brine conditions |
ASTM B381 states the Grade F-7 composition as unalloyed titanium plus 0.12 to 0.25 percent palladium, and Grade F-12 as a titanium alloy with 0.3 percent molybdenum and 0.8 percent nickel.
The parts a chemical plant normally orders as forgings
| Part | Shape family it is forged from |
|---|---|
| Valve bodies and ball valve components | Block or forged round bar |
| Agitator and mixer shafts | Forged round bar |
| Sleeves and rings | Ring |
| Blind and cover components | Disc |
The sizes Beiyu reviews against
| Shape | Range |
|---|---|
| Forged round bar | 50 mm to 500 mm diameter, length to 3000 mm |
| Ring | Outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm, inside diameter 10 mm to 900 mm, height 20 mm to 400 mm |
| Disc | Outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm, thickness 20 mm to 500 mm |
| Block | 50 mm to 600 mm, governing dimension from the drawing |
The envelope is a production capability, not a stock statement, and the ordered combination is confirmed at quotation.
What a plant buyer normally asks for beyond the grade
On pressure and process duty the document scope is part of the acceptance, not an afterthought. It is agreed before production, and some of it has to be scheduled while the material is still in the right condition.
| Field | Why it is on the order |
|---|---|
| Examination method and coverage | A forged section can carry a discontinuity no surface method reaches |
| Acceptance standard and class | Makes pass or fail objective at receiving inspection |
| Stage of examination | Decides whether it happens before or after machining |
| Certificate scope | Decides what is reported against the heat |
What to state on the purchase order
Part: ______ (valve body, agitator shaft, sleeve, disc) Process medium and concentration: ______ Operating temperature: ______ Governing standard: ______ (ASTM B381) Grade: ______ (state the commercial name and the B381 designation) UNS: ______ Drawing: ______ (attach it; the drawing governs the shape) Finished dimensions and machining allowance: ______ Condition: ______ (R / M, stated on the order) Examination scope: ______ (method, coverage, acceptance standard, class and stage) Certificate: EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate with heat number traceability, reporting scope by order
State the medium and the temperature on the same line as the part. Beiyu reviews the grade, shape and size combination against ASTM B381 before quoting, and products are made to ISO 9001 and, where the order requires it, to PED 2014/68/EU requirements.
Specification detail with sources
The three grades named above are defined by composition in the standard itself. ASTM B381 lists Grade F-2 as unalloyed titanium under UNS R50400, Grade F-7 as unalloyed titanium plus 0.12 to 0.25 percent palladium under UNS R52400, and Grade F-12 as a titanium alloy with 0.3 percent molybdenum and 0.8 percent nickel under UNS R53400 (ASTM B381, scope). The same standard covers annealed forgings, so the delivery condition is part of what the specification already assumes rather than an extra you add.
| Grade under ASTM B381 | UNS | Composition as stated in the standard |
|---|---|---|
| Grade F-2 | R50400 | Unalloyed titanium |
| Grade F-7 | R52400 | Unalloyed titanium plus 0.12 to 0.25 percent palladium |
| Grade F-12 | R53400 | Titanium alloy, 0.3 percent molybdenum and 0.8 percent nickel |
How those elements are measured is also fixed by reference. ASTM B381 lists ASTM E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen by inert gas fusion, ASTM E1447 for hydrogen, ASTM E1941 for carbon by combustion, ASTM E539 for X-ray fluorescence analysis and ASTM E2371 for plasma atomic emission analysis (ASTM B381, referenced documents). Naming the method on the order settles how the number on the certificate was produced. It does not extend the specification: ASTM B381 states that product analysis tolerances do not broaden the heat analysis requirements, and that elements not listed in the chemical table are not required to be analysed unless the purchase order asks for them (ASTM B381, chemical composition). In Beiyu’s supply practice the grade, shape and examination scope are confirmed against the drawing and the ordered standard before pricing.
