Titanium Plate & Sheet RFQ Checklist: Grade, Standard, Thickness and Inspection

Titanium plate and sheet RFQ checklist for grade, standard, thickness and inspection

A titanium plate or sheet quotation needs more than the grade. State the grade, the ASTM or ASME standard, thickness, width, length, tolerance, surface condition, supply condition, inspection scope and certificate package in one RFQ. This checklist gives engineering and purchasing teams the exact fields a supplier needs to quote titanium sheet and plate without a round of clarification.

What a complete titanium plate inquiry should include

Thickness, flatness, surface finish, supply condition, cut-to-size requirement, inspection and certificate scope all change the rolling route, the cutting method and the lead time. An RFQ that says only “Grade 2 titanium plate” cannot be quoted until those fields are confirmed. The list below lets the supplier confirm at once whether the request is stock sheet, heavier plate, aerospace flat product, or cut-to-size blanks.

Minimum RFQ information

Field to state What the guide states
Grade and alloy Grade 2, Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 7, Grade 12, Grade 23 or another grade. Add the UNS if required, for example UNS R56400 for Ti-6Al-4V.
Standard and revision ASTM B265 for titanium sheet and plate, ASME SB-265 for code equipment, and AMS 4911 for aerospace Ti-6Al-4V flat product.
Thickness, width and length The single most important plate field. Distinguish thin-gauge sheet from heavier plate.
Tolerance and flatness Thickness tolerance and flatness if the part is machined or formed.
Surface condition Cold-rolled pickled or polished for sheet, hot-rolled and descaled for plate.
Supply condition Annealed, or solution treated and aged for Grade 5 where required.
Cut-to-size Whether you need full plates or cut blanks, and the cutting method (shear, waterjet, plasma).
Quantity and documents Quantity, mill test certificate, heat-number traceability and EN 10204 3.1 if required.

Grade and standard routing

Use specific wording instead of “titanium plate” with no grade, thickness or standard.

Buyer intent Recommended RFQ wording Product
Pressure vessels, tanks, corrosion service Grade 2 titanium plate to ASTM B265 (or ASME SB-265 for code), with thickness, width, length, surface and MTC Grade 2 sheet & plate
High-strength structural plate Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V plate to ASTM B265, annealed unless another condition is specified Grade 5 plate
Aerospace flat product Ti-6Al-4V sheet or plate to AMS 4911, annealed, with UT for plate per the spec AMS 4911 guide
Aggressive chemical or hot-brine service Grade 7 or Grade 12 titanium plate to ASTM B265, with the acid and temperature stated Grade 7 / Grade 12
Toughness-critical or medical-related Grade 23 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI) plate to ASTM F136 / B265 Grade 23 ELI plate

Fields that affect quotation review

  • Thickness and flatness: the thickness band sets the rolling route; flatness matters for machined and formed parts.
  • Surface: pickled, polished or descaled. Surface changes inspection and machining allowance.
  • Condition: annealed or STA. For Ti-6Al-4V flat product, state the condition.
  • Cut-to-size: full plate vs blanks; cutting method affects edge condition and tolerance.
  • Documents: mill test certificate, heat-number traceability, EN 10204 3.1, plus ASME certification for code work.

Inspection and documentation: define the package before the quotation is finalized

For traceable export orders, confirm the certificate type, heat-number marking, inspection scope and packing labels before rolling or cutting begins.

Inspection and packing item What the guide states
Material identity grade, UNS, standard and heat-number requirements.
Inspection scope dimensional and flatness report, visual inspection, ultrasonic testing for plate, PMI or hardness if needed.
Export packing moisture protection, edge protection, wooden case or pallet, and shipping marks.

A ready-to-send RFQ line

Specific enough for material review, while leaving room to confirm tolerance, inspection and lead time:

“Grade 2 titanium plate, ASTM B265 (dual-certified ASME SB-265), thickness 10 mm, 1000 x 2000 mm, pickled surface, annealed, MTC and EN 10204 3.1 required, cut to 4 plates, export wooden-case packing.”

Specification detail with sources

ASTM B265 sets the minima a plate MTC is accepted against: annealed Grade 2 requires at least 345 MPa tensile strength with yield between 275 and 450 MPa, and Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) requires at least 895 MPa tensile with 828 MPa minimum yield. Because the Grade 2 yield window carries a 450 MPa upper bound, a certificate can fail high as well as low, so the yield line deserves the same check as the tensile line.

Grade, annealed Requirement per ASTM B265
Grade 2 At least 345 MPa tensile, with yield between 275 and 450 MPa

Beiyu’s rolling envelope answers the thickness field in 3 windows: foil from 0.02 to 0.3 mm at widths up to 600 mm, sheet and thin plate from 0.5 to 3 mm at widths up to 1500 mm, and plate from 3 to 70 mm at widths up to 2500 mm, all in lengths up to 6000 mm. Beiyu supplies 4 surface routes on flat product, cold-rolled bright, hot-rolled pickled, ground and sandblasted, so the surface line of this checklist can name one route instead of a loose word.

Standards and sources

Standards referenced are ASTM B265 (titanium strip, sheet and plate), ASME SB-265 (the ASME code equivalent), AMS 4911 (aerospace Ti-6Al-4V sheet, strip and plate) and ASTM F136 (Ti-6Al-4V ELI for surgical implants). Confirm the current revision and the certificate package on the order, and confirm the supplied material against its mill test certificate.

Standard Scope
ASTM B265 Titanium strip, sheet and plate
ASME SB-265 The ASME code equivalent
AMS 4911 Aerospace Ti-6Al-4V sheet, strip and plate
ASTM F136 Ti-6Al-4V ELI for surgical implants
