Product Introduction
Grade 5 Titanium Forging Blocks for Machined Components
Beiyu supplies Grade 5 titanium forging blocks and forged blanks for machined components requiring higher strength-to-weight ratio than commercially pure titanium. Grade 5, also known as Ti-6Al-4V, is commonly used for aerospace-related parts, marine components, medical-related parts, tooling, fixtures and precision machined industrial components.
Forging block RFQs should include both the forging blank dimensions and the final machined drawing. This helps confirm machining allowance, tolerance, grain flow direction, inspection scope and whether the order requires forged block, forged disc, forged ring, forged bar or custom near-net-shape forging.
Grade and Standard
| Material grade | Grade 5 / Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400. |
|---|---|
| Common standard | ASTM B381 for titanium and titanium alloy forgings. |
| Related material reference | AMS 4928 may be requested for aerospace-related Ti-6Al-4V bar or forging material requirements. |
| Product forms | Forged block, forged billet, forged disc, forged ring, forged bar and drawing-based forged blank. |
Forging Dimensions and Machining Allowance
Buyers should specify forging size, final machined dimensions, tolerance, heat treatment condition, surface condition, quantity and inspection requirements. For parts that will be CNC machined after forging, drawings should identify datum surfaces, critical dimensions, machining allowance and any special grain flow or mechanical property requirements.
Surface condition may include black forged surface, machined surface, blasted surface or rough turned surface depending on the next production step. If ultrasonic testing is required, the inspection class and acceptance criteria should be defined in the purchase specification.
Common Applications
Ti-6Al-4V forging
Inspection and Documentation
For Grade 5 forging blocks, buyers can request mill test certificate, EN10204 3.1 documentation, heat number traceability, chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensional inspection. Depending on application, ultrasonic testing, PMI testing, hardness testing, tensile testing, microstructure review or third-party inspection can be specified.
Packaging and Export Information
Forging blocks should be packed according to weight, surface condition and machining requirement. Machined or rough turned surfaces need protection against dents and contamination. Export packing may use wooden cases or pallets with item labels showing grade, heat number, dimensions, quantity and purchase order reference.

FAQ
What is Grade 5 titanium forging block used for?
Grade 5 titanium forging block is used for machined components that need higher strength-to-weight ratio, including aerospace-related, marine, medical-related and industrial parts.
Which standard is commonly used for titanium forgings?
ASTM B381 is commonly used for titanium and titanium alloy forgings. Aerospace-related projects may also reference AMS material requirements depending on drawing and purchase specification.
Why are both forging and final machining drawings needed?
The forging drawing confirms blank size and allowance, while the final drawing confirms critical dimensions, tolerances and inspection points. Both help avoid quoting a blank that cannot support the final machined part.

Specification detail with sources
Grade 5 on a forging order is fixed by composition inside the standard. ASTM B381 lists Grade F-5 as Ti-6Al-4V under UNS R56400 (ASTM B381, scope), and defines a forging as any product of work on metal formed to a desired shape by impact or pressure in hammers, forging machines, upsetters, presses or related forming equipment (ASTM B381, terminology). Material conforming to ASTM B348 has to be used when forgings are produced to the standard (ASTM B381, materials and manufacture), so a Grade 5 block starts from bar or billet stock and is worked down to the blank size shown on the drawing.
| Forged shape the Grade 5 blank is taken from | Size range Beiyu reviews the drawing against |
|---|---|
| Block | 50 mm to 600 mm across the governing section |
| Disc | Outside diameter 50 mm to 2000 mm, height 20 mm to 500 mm |
| Forged round bar | Diameter 50 mm to 500 mm, length to 3000 mm |
These three ranges describe the forging envelope Beiyu quotes against rather than material held on the floor, and one part seldom sits at the top of every column at once. The ordered combination of grade, shape, size and inspection is confirmed at quotation.
Grade 5 blocks usually leave as blanks with machining stock left on them. State the finished dimensions from the machining drawing along with the allowance to be carried on each face, and the forged size follows from those two figures. The same finished part can often come from a block, a disc or a forged round, and the choice follows the section shape and how much metal the machinist plans to remove.
Values on the certificate come from the methods the standard references: ASTM E8 for tension testing, ASTM E1409 for oxygen and nitrogen by inert gas fusion, ASTM E1447 for hydrogen and ASTM E1941 for carbon by combustion (ASTM B381, referenced documents). Naming a method explains how a reported result was obtained. It does not place an inspection on the order by itself, so ultrasonic examination, positive material identification, dimensional reporting or witnessed inspection apply when the purchase order calls for them and states method, coverage and acceptance class. Stage matters as well on a block that is machined afterwards, because an examination on the forged blank and one after machining do not cover the same material.
Largest forged sizes reviewed against, in both units
The envelope above is written in millimetres because that is how the drawing usually arrives. Buyers working to inch drawings compare capacity in inches, so the same limits are restated below in both units. Nothing here is new capability; it is the same envelope expressed so it can be compared against a supplier list without converting anything first.
| Forged form | Largest size reviewed against | Same limit in inches | Governing dimension |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ring | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with inside diameter to 900 mm (35.4 in) and height to 400 mm (15.7 in) |
| Disc | Outside diameter up to 2000 mm | up to 78.7 in | Outside diameter, with thickness to 500 mm (19.7 in) |
| Block | Up to 600 mm across the governing section | up to 23.6 in | The section named on the drawing |
| Forged round bar | Diameter up to 500 mm, length to 3000 mm | up to 19.7 in diameter, 118 in long | Diameter, then length |
These are production envelope limits reviewed against, not a stock statement, and not every combination of grade, size, condition and inspection exists across the whole range. The ordered combination is confirmed at quotation. Where a drawing sits outside a limit above, say so in the enquiry rather than rounding the part down, because the answer may simply be no, and knowing that early is worth more than a rounded drawing.
Two fields decide the answer faster than the size itself. The governing dimension is the one the tolerance applies to, and on a ring that is not always the outside diameter. The supply condition, stated as R or M on the order, belongs on the same line as the size, since the same nominal size in a different condition is a different piece of work.

Specification for Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V forgings
These are the fields an order line needs. The mechanical requirement that applies is the one in ASTM B381 for the ordered form, size range and condition, so it is confirmed against the ordered standard at quotation rather than carried across from another product standard.

The envelope above is the production capability. It does not mean every combination of grade, condition, surface, tolerance and inspection is available across the whole range, and it is not a stock statement. The ordered combination is confirmed at quotation.
Inspection and documentation
The inspection scope is set by the order rather than assumed. State which examinations are required, to which acceptance standard and class, and at which stage they are performed, because those four fields are what make an inspection line objectively verifiable during receiving inspection.
