Grade 9 Titanium Tube for Lightweight Tubing Applications

Grade 9 titanium tube, also known as Ti-3Al-2.5V or TA18, is used where a higher strength-to-weight ratio is required than commercially pure titanium tube can provide. It is commonly specified for bicycle tubing, aerospace-related hydraulic lines, lightweight structures, sporting equipment and other tubing assemblies where strength, fatigue resistance, corrosion resistance and controlled dimensions matter.

Grade 9 tube should be quoted by standard, outside diameter, wall thickness, length, condition and tolerance. The production route may involve hot extrusion, cold rolling or cold drawing depending on the requested size range and final condition.

Grade and Standards

  • Material: Grade 9 titanium / Ti-3Al-2.5V / UNS R56320.
  • Common standards: ASTM B338 for condenser and heat-exchanger tubing, ASTM B861 for seamless titanium pipe, AMS 4943 or customer specifications where applicable.
  • Condition: annealed or cold-worked stress-relieved condition according to the order requirement.
  • Surface condition: pickled, polished or as specified by drawing.

Available Size Information

Grade 9 tube can be quoted by outside diameter, inside diameter, wall thickness and length. For precision tubing, include tolerance, straightness, ovality, surface finish and end condition. If the tube will be bent, welded, swaged or machined, include the downstream process so the material condition can be reviewed.

Common Applications

  • Bicycle frame and lightweight structural tubing
  • Aerospace-related hydraulic and fluid lines where the specification allows Grade 9
  • Sporting, marine and industrial lightweight tube assemblies
  • Corrosion-resistant tube parts requiring higher strength than Grade 2

Inspection and Documentation

Tube orders can be quoted with mill test certificate, chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat-number traceability, dimensional inspection and visual surface inspection. For critical tubing, specify whether ultrasonic testing, eddy-current testing, hydrostatic testing, PMI or third-party inspection is required.

Packaging and Export

Titanium tubes are normally bundled or packed in wooden cases depending on length, wall thickness and surface finish. Ends can be protected when required, and bundles can be marked by heat number, size and purchase order for traceable receiving inspection.

RFQ Information Needed

  • Grade 9 / Ti-3Al-2.5V requirement and applicable standard
  • OD, wall thickness, length and tolerance
  • Condition, surface finish and end requirement
  • Application, bending or machining process if known
  • MTC, EN 10204 3.1, NDT, PMI or third-party inspection requirements

FAQ

How is Grade 9 different from Grade 2 tube?
Grade 9 is a Ti-3Al-2.5V alloy with higher strength than commercially pure Grade 2 titanium, while still offering useful corrosion resistance and formability for tubing applications.

Can Grade 9 tube be supplied for bicycle frames?
Yes. Buyers should provide OD, wall thickness, length, condition, surface finish and any bending or welding requirements.

Which documents should be requested?
Common documents include MTC, heat-number traceability, dimensional inspection and EN 10204 3.1 when required by the purchase specification.

Tube Tolerance and Downstream Processing

Grade 9 tube is often selected for parts that will be bent, welded, swaged or precision-machined after delivery. The RFQ should state the downstream process, because wall-thickness tolerance, straightness, surface condition and material condition can affect forming performance. For bicycle or lightweight frame applications, specify whether the tube needs straight lengths, cut lengths, polished surface, butted sections or special end preparation.

For hydraulic or fluid-line applications, buyers should define the controlling standard, test requirement and cleanliness expectation. If the tube will be assembled with fittings, the drawing should include end detail, bend radius, pressure requirement and inspection method so the quotation can reflect the correct tubing condition and documentation package.

Specification detail with sources

ASTM B861 Grade 9 (UNS R56320) is Ti-3Al-2.5V with 2.5 to 3.5 percent aluminium and 2.0 to 3.0 percent vanadium, and it carries two different acceptance levels: annealed material is judged against a 620 MPa minimum tensile strength, while cold worked stress relieved tube must reach 860 MPa. The condition line on the purchase order therefore changes the numbers the mill test certificate is measured against, which is unusual among the common titanium tube grades and a frequent source of rejected paperwork.

Beiyu Titanium produces Grade 9 tube by extrusion followed by cold rolling and supplies it in the M annealed or Y cold worked conditions, using the condition codes defined in GB/T 2965, where M marks annealed and Y marks cold worked material. An enquiry should pair the condition with OD, wall and the downstream operation, bending, swaging or machining, because tube ordered at the 860 MPa level forms very differently from annealed stock, and Beiyu confirms the workable combination at quotation rather than after the mill run.

Specification for Grade 9 Ti-3Al-2.5V tube

These are the fields an order line needs. The mechanical requirement that applies is the one in ASTM B338 for the ordered form, size range and condition, so it is confirmed against the ordered standard at quotation rather than carried across from another product standard.

Dimensions

State outside diameter, wall thickness and length, and say whether the item is ordered as tube or as pipe, because that is what fixes the governing standard and with it the acceptance requirements.

Inspection and documentation

The inspection scope is set by the order rather than assumed. State which examinations are required, to which acceptance standard and class, and at which stage they are performed, because those four fields are what make an inspection line objectively verifiable during receiving inspection.
