Acceptance is by the ordered specification. Values are RFQ references only. Final grade, chemistry, dimensions, inspection and documentation are confirmed by the purchase specification and mill test certificate.

Zirconium (Zr) resists hydrochloric, nitric and sulphuric acids and alkalis, making zirconium bar and wire a key material for severe chemical-process service where stainless and even some nickel alloys fail.

Grades and standards

GradeUNSCompositionStandard
Zr Grade 702R60702Unalloyed zirconiumASTM B550; AWS A5.24 for welding wire
Zr Grade 705R60705Zr-2.5NbASTM B550; AWS A5.24 for welding wire

Grade 702 is the general corrosion grade; Grade 705 (Zr-2.5Nb) adds strength for pressure parts. Document and traceability scope, including MTC and EN 10204 3.1 when required, is confirmed in the quotation and purchase order.

Typical size range

  • Bar: 5 mm to 150 mm diameter, length to 6000 mm
  • Wire: 0.5 mm to 6 mm diameter, length to 6000 mm
  • Plate and sheet: set out on zirconium plate and sheet
  • Condition: annealed; pickled surface

Applications

Chemical-process reactors, heat exchangers and valves
Acetic / formic acid and hydrochloric acid service
Reactive-metal and pharmaceutical equipment

Corrosion notes

Zirconium resists most acids and alkalis, including hot HCl where titanium struggles. It is attacked by hydrofluoric acid, concentrated sulphuric acid above ~70%, and wet chlorine. check the medium and temperature against a corrosion chart before selecting.

FAQ

Zirconium or titanium for acids?
Zirconium resists hot reducing acids (e.g. boiling HCl, sulphuric) better than titanium and is often chosen where titanium is at its limit. Tantalum covers the most aggressive cases.

Is this reactor-grade zirconium?
No. Grade 702/705 are the industrial (chemical) grades. Nuclear reactor-grade zirconium (low hafnium) is a different specification; ask if you need it.

Inspection, documentation and packing

Available supply includes Grade 702 or 705 zirconium bar and wire in annealed condition with a pickled surface. Required heat-number marking and export packing are confirmed in the quotation and purchase order.

Related products and alternatives

Zirconium often sits between titanium and tantalum for hot acids: where titanium reaches its limit but tantalum is more than needed, zirconium fits - see why titanium resists corrosion and tantalum plate for the next step up.

Which zirconium grade the order means

Zirconium for chemical service is not one material. The commonly supplied industrial grades include an unalloyed one and one carrying niobium for higher strength, and they are bought for different reasons rather than as substitutes. An enquiry naming only zirconium leaves that choice open, and it is not a choice a supplier can make from a drawing.

There is a second distinction that catches buyers who have read reactor literature. Industrial zirconium is supplied with its natural hafnium content left in, since hafnium occurs with zirconium in the ore and removing it is done for neutron absorption reasons rather than for corrosion ones. Nuclear grades are the ones where hafnium is restricted, they cost accordingly, and a chemical plant almost never needs them. Stating the grade rather than the element removes the most expensive misunderstanding in this material. Beyond that the enquiry needs the governing specification, the product form with dimensions and tolerance, the delivery condition, the surface condition and the inspection scope, all of which Beiyu Titanium reviews before quoting.

Specification detail with sources

The Beiyu Titanium supply ranges publish zirconium round bar at Ø5 mm to 150 mm with length to 6000 mm against ASTM B550, and zirconium wire at Ø0.5 mm to 6 mm with the same length limit. Plate and sheet are listed separately against ASTM B551 and are set out on zirconium plate and sheet. Two grades run across all of it, the UNS designations R60702 as ZR702 and R60705 as ZR705.

Zirconium is the one metal among the refractory range where a standard is paired with each product form instead of being listed once for the element, so B550 against round bar, B551 against sheet and plate, and AWS A5.24 / A5.24M with ASME SFA-5.24 / SFA-5.24M against wire are what the published entry prints rather than anything inferred from it. Those two wire documents are the bare welding rod and electrode specifications. Naming them does not put zirconium wire outside the ASTM B series: ASTM B550/B550M is separately titled for zirconium bar and wire and covers both forms in its own scope at section 1.1, and its section 8.1 requires wire supplied for welding applications to be furnished in a temper suitable for uniform feeding. Three points are worth carrying into the enquiry. Say whether the wire is a welding consumable or a mill product. Note that the tensile table in B550 is footnoted for bar only, so a wire line cannot be accepted or rejected against those figures unless the order adds a supplementary requirement. And note that the published bar row starts at 5 mm while the published wire row runs to 6 mm, so any diameter from 5 to 6 mm sits in both rows; B550 Table 1 calls cold-finished sizes of 13 mm and under wire when coiled and cut wire in straight lengths, and that is the distinction the order should make.
